2009 Team Rider Profile: Desiree Moyer
Which boardsports are you into and when did you start?
Surfing – 2000
Kitesurfing – 2006
Windsurfing – long time ago (before carbon fiber)
Which would you like to learn and why?
I have a lot to learn in all 3 sports! I am truly enjoying the progression.
Describe your first surfing session
I paddled into my first wave on a longboard in the Dominican Republic and stood up the first try! Then, I was soooooo hooked.
Where and why did you start
Surfing: Dominican Republic while on vacation because it looked so cool and I’ve always wanted to learn.
Windsurfing: Dewey Beach, DE because I wanted to do something fun while catching a tan at the beach.
Kitesurfing: Cape Cod because my friend Brian made me!! And, I saw the interest other Wahines had in the planned 2006 CCW Kitesurfing Clinic with Petra Kanz.
Think of a great water sesh you’ve had recently. How did you feel after?
I felt very relaxed, like I’d just gotten back from vacation.
Ever compete? Wanna try?
No, I'm not very competitive...
Wahine Wisdom for newbies:
If you really want to have fun and excel at any of these watersports, time on the water is critical. Therefore, make the sport a very high priority. No excuses!
Favorite non-wahine activities:
Lately, I have really enjoyed participating in the Green movement, including watching the success of my husband’s new solar energy endeavor, My Generation Energy. Other addictions I have are video editing, photography, kite board building, gardening, reading, hanging with family and good friends…and, well, just being GREEN.
Where have you traveled to windsurf/surf/kite?
New Zealand, Australia, Dominican Republic, Costa Rica, Cape Hatteras, Aruba, San Francisco, Madeleine Islands, Barbados, St Croix
Describe the best trip you’ve taken in the last 3 years (doesn’t have to be water related).
I went to New Zealand for over a month! Took our kiting equipment and surfboards, rented a CamperVan, toured both islands, kited and surfed almost every day, fell into bed exhausted at night. My type of vacation;)
Name a few wahines who have influenced you.
That’s a toughie as there are so many. One of my high school teachers. I was a total ‘tomboy’ in high school (ya, imagine that!). She taught me that it is super cool for a girl to be athletic and to strive to be good at sports, if so desired. And….to dare the boys to keep up!
Why are you stoked about the CCW?
The camaraderie is amazing! I’ve met so many interesting people thru this group, some of which are now my good friends. Also, it is a terrific way to give something back to your passion.
Where would you like to see the CCW a few years from now?
I would love to see many more wahines as Team Riders to share their individual talents such that the CCW continues to grow and blossom into the incredible organization for which it has the potential. Not too high a bar, eh?
Your personal water goals for 2009?
My personal water goals for ’09 include inspiring other girls to get out there and have a blast on the water.
